Luke 5

Me fishing, 35" blue catfish, 21 pounds -- biggest fish I've ever caught.

Last week, I went fishing but didn’t catch anything. We were fishing for fun. The day before, I caught a 21-pound fish, so I was hoping for something bigger, which made me a bit disappointed. Peter and his crew had been out all night, fishing to earn a living, but they didn’t catch anything. They weren’t fishing for fun; they were fishing to survive. I can’t imagine how tired and discouraged they must have felt. But when they listened to and obeyed Jesus, they went out again, even though they were exhausted. To their surprise, they ended up needing help to pull in a huge catch. How much better our lives could be if we listened to and obeyed Jesus, even when we feel tired and discouraged.

Verse 18 also hit me this morning. The paralyzed fella had some good friends who were willing to go the extra mile to help him get to Jesus. They had to climb, lift, and lower him down through a roof. We all need friends like that; we need to be friends like that.

We see a pattern passed down from Abraham to his son Isaac in Genesis 26. Abraham lied about Sara being his sister, not his wife, to save his own life in Genesis 12:10-20 and 20:1-8. Then in Genesis 26, Isaac does the same thing; he’s afraid that the people in this foreign land he’s found…

Man, there’s a lot to soak in in today’s readings. Job lost everything but his integrity, his 10 kids that he loved, and thousands of animals. But he didn’t lose his integrity. He still praised God. I don’t know how many times I’ve run into small messes and crashed out; I need to be more…

  • Get Moving

“Then the Lord said to us, Get moving” appears twice in Deuteronomy 2; it made me pause and think. In Deuteronomy, God tells His people to move forward in obedience and trust. When I consider this alongside the New Testament, I see a connection: just as God called the Israelites into action, we too are…

I love how God lets Adam name all the animals; it’s like he wants his input. I think that’s one of the cool things about God. I believe God is excited to see what we are going to do. I believe he wants us to share our ideas, thoughts, our highs and lows with him….

  • Exodus 36 and 37

I’m finally getting back on track after losing an hour to the time change. This morning’s reading was Exodus 36 and 37. The Israelites are building the Tabernacle, a portable tent/sanctuary to house the Ark of the Covenant, and to signal God’s Holy presence. God gifted Bezalel, Oholiab, and other skilled craftsmen with wisdom and…
