Genesis 1

It’s so cool that the first thing we learn about God is that he is creative.

‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. ‘

God created using his words; the phrase “Then God said” was used 9 times in the first chapter.

God created us in his image (Genesis 1:26). I believe it’s in our very nature to create, to be creative, to be artisans in what we do.  One way we can be creative is with our words. We can use our words to build up or tear down relationships, to encourage or discourage. We can create heaven or hell with our words. I have to remind myself of what James said daily.

‘Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. ‘

I’m writing this on a Friday, T.G.I.F. Thank God it’s Friday, we say. Most scholars believe Jesus was crucified on Friday. After today’s reading, I’m thinking T.G.I.F. should stand for Thank God it’s Forgiveness. Jesus is brought before Pilate and Herod. They don’t find anything they can execute him for. But there’s an angry, bloodthirsty…

I find the lives of the early Christians fascinating. In Acts 13, the prophets and teachers of the church in Antioch were fasting and worshiping the Lord. I wonder what our world would look like if members of the church gathered more often to worship, fast, and pray. It seems like we usually go to…

I think we often complicate the Gospel. Romans 10:4 and 9-10 offer a beautiful, striking simplicity. Paul wrote to early Christians who were exhausted by trying to “earn” their way to God. He gave them a lifeline: Christ fulfills the Law. Because Jesus finished the work, God now makes us right with Him the moment…
