Exodus 2 and 3
Today, let us remember that God can use our weaknesses and our past for His perfect plan. In today’s reading of Exodus 2 and 3, we learn about Moses. I liked thinking about how God saves Moses, and his mom gets paid to nurse her own baby boy. Even though Moses killed an Egyptian, he goes on the run from Pharaoh, God calls him by name, and calls him out.
While on the run, Moses stands up for the oppressed again and ends up marrying Zipporah. You know, I love these old names; her name sounds like my old Italian Grandma telling you to “Zipporah your coat, before you catch a cold.”
The Egyptians loathed shepherds; Moses was brought up in Pharaoh’s household. So becoming a shepherd must have been quite a demotion. I love how Moses gets demoted; he feels unworthy. But then God speaks to him through a burning bush and promotes him. God can use our setbacks to change the world.
God calls Moses by name and gives him specific instructions. I can’t imagine how Moses felt when God spoke to him through a burning bush, telling him to kick off my shoes, he’s on Holy Ground.
‘10Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt.” ‘
Exodus 3:10
But, Moses protested, “Who am I to appear before Pharaoh?” Do you think Moses was hanging on to his past? Maybe, he’s thinking, I’m a lowly shepherd, how can I talk to the most powerful person around?
I think God choosing Moses is another example of God not calling the qualified, but qualifying the called. I wonder how many of us let our past and perceived limitations limit a limitless God? Lord, I pray for you to work through our weakness today. Help us to remember we can do all things through Christ, who gives us strength.
