Phones, Wallets and Wolves

There’s so much going on in today’s readings, but what really struck me is the courage and the trust the apostles had in Jesus. He sends them out to witness to the people of Israel with nothing but authority and instructions.

‘Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness. ‘
Matthew 10:1

In verse 16, Jesus tells them he’s sending them out as sheep among the wolves. Starting in 17, he tells them they will be flogged and arrested. And they went.

I can’t imagine leaving the house without my wallet and phone. Reading Matthew 10, I’m challenged to trust more, to be strong, brave, and wise. Oh, how I need more of the Holy Spirit, because those are not qualities that come easy to me.

I’m not a big fan of public speaking, but I’m getting better at it; still, when I speak in front of a group, intrusive thoughts creep in and threaten to overwhelm me. Crazy thoughts like:

  • What will people think about my southern accent?
  • What if I say something wrong?
  • Oh man, what if I pee my pants?

Like the apostles, my complete identity should be in Christ, not what others think of me. I need to pray before I speak, and trust the Holy Spirit to pray and speak for me.

There is a popular saying: “It’s none of my business what people think of me.”

I believe that’s true, but we should consider Christ’s opinion in our thinking, speaking, and doing. We need to stand firm, be present, and be mindful of Christ in every situation.

Christ is with us.

‘Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”’ Matthew 28:20

‘Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love. ‘1 Corinthians 16:13-14
