From Independence Day to Dependence Day
We just celebrated Independence Day this weekend, and we’re making steady progress toward our goal of reading the whole Bible this year. The scripture that stood out to me today was 1 Chronicles 27:32 and Hebrews 3:12-13.
‘Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a wise counselor to the king, a man of great insight, and a scribe. Jehiel the Hacmonite was responsible for teaching the king’s sons. ‘
1 Chronicles 27:32‘Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. ‘
Hebrews 3:12-13
1 Chronicles 27:32 tells us that David had a wise counselor with great insight who advised him. Oh, how we need strong Christian mentors and advisors in our lives to help us. Hebrews 3 warns us to be careful not to fall into the same trap the Israelites did by turning from God. Pondering this, I believe one way to do so is to declare today my “Dependence Day.” I am totally dependent on Jesus, who sustains my every breath and leads me on the right path.
‘The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. ‘
Psalms 32:8
Having watched Young Washington this past weekend, I’d give the movie 2 thumbs up. Learning that our first president was a prolific writer intrigued me. George Washington wrote constantly and kept meticulous records. His habit, alongside these verses, reminds us of the importance of reflecting on our lives daily. We need to ask ourselves, how did I do today in my job as an ambassador for Christ? Did I make him look great? Did I fall short? Do I need to repent and ask forgiveness? Would today’s story get 2 thumbs up?
One easy way to do this is to set aside a few minutes at the end of each day to pray or jot down a quick reflection, asking: What did I do today that reflected Christ’s love? What is one area I can grow in tomorrow to be more like the King of Kings? Better yet, share these reflections with a trusted Christian mentor or friend. Making this a simple daily habit can help us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.
