Genesis 46 and Acts 22

This morning, I am studying Genesis 46 and Acts 22. In Genesis 46:2, God spoke to Jacob, and Jacob responded, “Here I am.” Then in Acts 22:7-8, God speaks to Paul. They both received instructions from God; they listened, trusted, and obeyed.

2And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, “Jacob! Jacob!” “Here I am,” he replied. ‘
Genesis 46:2

7I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?’ 8 “‘‘Who are you, Lord?’ I asked. “‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,'” he replied. ‘
Acts 22:7-8

Jacob recognized the voice; Paul didn’t at first, but they both listened, trusted, and obeyed God.

Am I listening for God? When I hear from him, will I trust, obey, and follow his instructions?

I love the old hymn, Trust and Obey, and this girl can sing.

Lord, help me to listen, to hear your voice. Help me be attentive to your will and to trust and obey. Give me a deep desire to do your will on earth, as it is in Heaven.

This morning, I woke up thinking about an old friend I haven’t seen or talked to in years. I’m not sure why they crossed my mind, but then I read something in Exodus 30 that made me think of their name. I just felt the need to pray for them and their family. I hope…

I’m still working my way through the Bible in a year; today’s Old Testament readings are from Exodus 8 and 9. We learn that God is sending more plagues. Egypt is overrun with frogs, gnats (or lice, depending on your version), and flies. Then, in 9, the livestock are wiped out, festering boils break out…

I like the contrast between the Roman Soldier’s humble faith, when he said, “Don’t trouble yourself; I’m not worthy for you to come in —just say the word, and my servant will be healed,” and the way he recognized absolute authority and treated Christ like a King. ‘When Jesus heard this, he was amazed.
