Job 29, Psalms 121, and Luke 19
Job longs for the good old days. We never know when a disaster will strike. This reminds me to be thankful for now—the time I have with my family, friends, and all my many blessings. I just had to replace an outdoor hydrant. Working in the cold and wet ticks me off — my beard ices up, and cold, wet gloves have never been my idea of fun.
But I had to pause and give thanks. I had the financial means and the physical and mental ability to get it done. And I didn’t crash out and only made 1 trip to the hardware store — That’s pretty good for me. I’m not saying I can consider it pure joy when troubles come my way as James describes. But I am making some progress in the perfection of Christ. I think people would stand in line for my problems. What everyday frustrations can we be thankful for today?
Psalms 121 reminds us that our true help comes from the one who created Heaven and Earth. ‘I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! ‘ Psalms 121:1-2
I need to keep looking for Christ for my help. Most of the time I’ve gotten into messes, I’ve been looking for other things to fulfill me. I would daydream about hitting the lottery, thinking a basket of money would solve all my problems. That might solve my money problems, but it could create a slew of other issues. 1/3rd of lottery winners eventually go bankrupt. I wonder how many have problems with family and friends?
Granny always told me the lottery was just another way for the government to suck money from the poor. I need to listen to Granny and Solomon.
Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness! Ecclesiastes 5:10
In Luke 19, we learn of Zacchaeus, who climbs a tree to see Jesus. People thought he was a sinner. But Jesus recognized him in the tree and called him by name. Zacchaeus, then, commits to giving 1/2 of his wealth to the poor, and if he ripped anyone off, he’d pay them back 4 times the amount he stole. Zacchaeus had to climb a tree to see Jesus. He was looking for him and found him. He took action, he looked, and he found Jesus; he committed his life to change. He gave up 1/2 of his wealth for the poor. How can I commit my life to Christ now? What can I give up today for Christ? Am I generous with what God has given me? Who can I serve today?
The Ten Servants
The Master gives his servants some money; 2 of them invest it, and he rewards them. But one servant doesn’t do jack with the money. He hides it. The Master is not pleased. What gifts has God given me? Have I hidden these gifts? Have I used them to help anyone? Am I being a good steward with what I have? I guess I have the gift of saying yes, of showing up, and trying. I need to reflect on this daily. How am I being a good servant and investing in others? Maybe it’s just my gapped-tooth smile, or a kind word.
