From Judges to Jesus

We are working our way through Judges 18, 19, and 20. I believe 19 is one of the most disturbing chapters in the Bible. We see how bad society gets when it doesn’t follow God and doesn’t have godly leaders. In a heavy contrast, today’s verse of the day is Acts 1:8.

‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts of the Apostles 1:8

Follow the Leader

Where the people of Judges failed, we are called to step up. We are called to follow our leader, Jesus. We are called to be leaders, to lead others to Christ. Our families and friends, that’s our first mission field. We can tell people about Christ with our words, but the biggest sermon we preach is how we live and act.

If we don’t set a daily goal to set our hearts on following Jesus, we become spiritually and morally bankrupt. That’s why it’s vital to start our day in prayer and with Bible study, and to keep the most important commandments at the forefront of our minds.

‘Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”‘
Mark 12:29-31

Our small acts can tell people about Christ.

A word of encouragement to someone. A smile, treating a janitor, cashier, or server with deep respect and kindness. Our everyday actions and reactions are what truly show Christ to others.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for leading us on the path of righteousness. We ask for the power of your Holy Spirit to help us be witnesses for you to everyone, everywhere. Lord Jesus, help us be bright lights shining for you. In the name above all names, the authority over all things, his name is Jesus, we pray, amen.

Today’s reading, John 6, shows Christ’s absolute authority. A boy hands Jesus 5 loaves and 2 fish—barely enough for a family—, yet Jesus feeds 5,000 people, with 12 baskets left over. This defies explanation; only God could do it. Christ is the authority over all things. Later, the disciples are 4 miles out in rough…

I’m not a fan of traveling. I’m a homebody, and travel today is a lot easier than it was in Paul’s time. I hate being stuck in an airport for a few hours. Reading Acts 27, we learn that travel was much more dangerous and that the weather played a major role. Paul warns the…

  • Faith vs. The Funk

Today is Ascension Day, marking 40 days after Easter, a time to reflect on Jesus ‘ return to Heaven. Fittingly, today’s New Testament reading is Philippians 4. ‘Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which…

  • Get Moving

“Then the Lord said to us, Get moving” appears twice in Deuteronomy 2; it made me pause and think. In Deuteronomy, God tells His people to move forward in obedience and trust. When I consider this alongside the New Testament, I see a connection: just as God called the Israelites into action, we too are…
