John 19, The Crucifixion

The brutality of Christ’s crucifixion in John 19 is agonizing. Though he was innocent, soldiers flogged him with a lead-tipped whip and crowned him with thorns while the crowd screamed, ‘Crucify him!’ After being forced to carry His own cross, He was nailed to the wood and His side was pierced by a spear.

I cannot imagine witnessing such cruelty inflicted on anyone, let alone one of my own children. To realize that Jesus endured this for us—to atone for our sins and set us right with God—leaves me overwhelmingly grateful.
