John 17, The Prayer of Jesus

I’ve read that there are over 45,000 different denominations of Christian churches worldwide. After reading John 17, we Christians should unite under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We must set aside our petty differences and unite around our core conviction: that Jesus Christ is Lord.

By ‘petty differences,’ I do not mean our core convictions about who Jesus is or how He saves us. Rather, I mean the secondary traditions—the man-made ‘fences’ we build around our worship styles, organizational structures, and non-essential rituals—that we often allow to overshadow the glory of our shared Lord and Savior, Jesus.

20 “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. 21I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.   22 “I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. 23I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. ‘

Cain didn’t do what was right, and God didn’t accept his gift. I wonder if he offered up a bunch of old stuff, stuff he typically feeds to his animals? Here are some moldy carrots, I usually give to the donkies. Regardless, it reminded me of the verse in Romans. ‘And so, dear brothers and…

This morning, I read Deuteronomy 9 and saw that Moses fasted for 40 days, not just once but twice. He prayed and pleaded with God not to destroy them. This is more than sacrifice; it shows what true intercession looks like. ‘26I prayed to the Lord and said, ‘O Sovereign Lord, do not destroy them….

I’m writing this on a Friday, T.G.I.F. Thank God it’s Friday, we say. Most scholars believe Jesus was crucified on Friday. After today’s reading, I’m thinking T.G.I.F. should stand for Thank God it’s Forgiveness. Jesus is brought before Pilate and Herod. They don’t find anything they can execute him for. But there’s an angry, bloodthirsty…

Sometimes our horses are out in the pasture, and we have to call them in. They will come racing towards us, and the roaring sound of their hooves on the hard ground is scary. That’s just 40 hooves. In Exodus 14, the people of Israel are pinned up, with the sea blocking their path and…
