Luke 24

The Walk to Emmaus
The empty tomb! Jesus has risen. He’s back! Two fellas who followed Jesus encounter the risen Lord on their walk to Emmaus. They don’t know it’s him (verse 16). He talks with them, they fill him in on what’s been happening in Jerusalem, like he doesn’t know. Then, in verse 27, Christ walks them through the Old Testament, explaining all the Scriptures that point to Him as the Messiah. What passages do you think he shared? I wondered what verses he filled them in on, so I asked in perplexity.

It blows me away that there are so many Old Testament verses that point to Christ. Prophets wrote scripture hundreds of years before he was born. God is always working; He knew us before our first breath, and He has a perfect plan for us. We need to walk with Him on the right path. They didn’t know Jesus was with them until he sat with them and broke bread.

30 As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them.
31 Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! ‘

Luke 24:30-31

Was there a word or a glance that Jesus gave that triggered their eyes being opened? I wonder whether their eyes saw his pierced hands as he held the bread, and suddenly their eyes were opened? Did they immediately recall Psalms 22:16-18, while their eyes were opening?

16 My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me.
They have pierced my hands and feet.
17 I can count all my bones.
My enemies stare at me and gloat.
18 They divide my garments among themselves and throw dice for my clothing.’

Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that we encounter Christ, that He explains the Scriptures to us and all believers clearly, that our eyes are opened, and that we have the courage and strength to apply Your Holy Word in our lives so that people see Christ in us. Amen.

We see a pattern passed down from Abraham to his son Isaac in Genesis 26. Abraham lied about Sara being his sister, not his wife, to save his own life in Genesis 12:10-20 and 20:1-8. Then in Genesis 26, Isaac does the same thing; he’s afraid that the people in this foreign land he’s found…
