Sacrifices in Leviticus

We are making our way through the Bible; today is day 71. Reading Leviticus 2, 3, and 4, we learn that, in addition to the burnt offering from Leviticus 1, there are 4 other types of offerings, each with specific instructions.

  • Grain Offering
  • Peace Offering
  • Sin Offering
  • Guilt Offering

These offerings had to be repeated over and over. Reading about the Sin Offering in chapter 4, we learn that this offering forgives intentional and unintentional sin. The sacrifices covered some sins and made the people right with God. However, if you blatantly broke some of the commandments, there wasn’t a sacrifice that would help you; you were toast. For example, worshipping false gods, idolatry, using God’s name in vain, breaking the Sabbath, and murder would get you cut off, or killed; no sacrifice could cover those. But the New Testament tells us about the perfect sacrifice, which covers all our sins and makes us right with God.

10For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.   11Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins. 12But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 13There he waits until his enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet. 14For by that one offering, he forever made perfect those who are being made holy.
Hebrews 10:10-14

16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.   18 “”here is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. ‘
John 3:16-18

‘It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. ‘
1 Peter 1:19

‘As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!”‘
John 1:36

Dear Heavenly Father, I am profoundly grateful for the blood of Jesus that takes away the sins of the world. Lord, you make the impossible possible. Lord, I’m sorry for my sins, the sins of my family, my community, my country, and the world. Lord help me to honor your sacrifice by living for you today. Let your light saturate my heart, mind, and soul. Like John the Baptist, I pray you become greater and greater, and I become less and less. Holy Spirit, guide our thoughts, words, and actions today, so we can be lights shining bright for you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Yesterday, my youngest and I were in the truck running errands, and he brought up confession. He said a Sunday School teacher told him that Catholics believe the priest forgives people’s sins. I told him that wasn’t correct, that Catholics believe only God forgives sins. The Catholic Catechism states that only God forgives sins (CCC…

This morning, while reading Genesis 50, we learn that Jacob has died. Joseph threw himself on him and wept and kissed him. He tells the physicians to embalm him, a process that takes 40 days. Then we read the Egyptians mourned Jacob for 70 days. That stopped me in my tracks. In Genesis 46, we…

We are reading Psalms 119:45-96 today. I love how the author mentions meditating on God’s commandments. They ponder, they reflect on God’s Holy Word. And verse 61 stuck out to me today. ‘Evil people try to drag me into sin, but I am firmly anchored to your instructions.’ Psalms 119:61 When I was younger, I…

  • Psalm 1

While reading Psalm 1 this morning, I couldn’t help but think this is a Psalm to model our lives around, and I wondered how my life would have been different if I had committed myself to it. In verse 1, we are told to choose our friends wisely, and in verse 2, we are told…

  • Job 42

Have you ever seen God? Reading Job 42, I love how Job says, I’d only heard about you before, but now I’ve seen you with my own eyes. Job experienced God, which led him to repent. This makes me wonder, do people see God through me? Do they experience Christ’s love through what they see,…
